Sri Lanka’s first Ashoka Pillar, erected in memory of Emperor Dharmashoka, was formally opened at the Waskaduwa Rajaguru Sri Subhuti Maha Viharaya under the patronage of His Excellency Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka. The unveiling coincided with the birthday observances of the temple’s chief prelate, conducted under the guidance of the Co-Head of the Vihara, Chairman of the International Buddhist Confederation, and Mahanayaka of the Amarapura Sri Sambuddha Sasanodaya Sangha Sabha, Most Ven. Dr. Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Nayaka Thero.

Attending the ceremony, the High Commissioner of India also paid homage to the Kapila Vastupura Holy Buddha Relics enshrined at the temple, which were specially displayed for the occasion. A large number of lay devotees in white attire participated in the auspicious event.
Delivering an address, Mahanayaka Thero, stated:
“There is a precious bond between India and us. We also hold a special reverence for Emperor Dharmashoka, though it is not often spoken about. Many Ashoka pillars exist across India. A day should be set aside in the name of Emperor Ashoka. I wished to speak about Emperor Dharmashoka and to build an Ashoka Pillar in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, this was constructed, and it is a joy that it has been opened with the participation of the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka”.
Extending good wishes, His Excellency Santosh Jha noted the importance of the friendship between India and Sri Lanka and affirmed India’s support for the development of Sri Lankan temples and pirivenas (monastic colleges).
The event was attended by the Registrar of the Amarapura Sri Sambuddha Sasanodaya Sangha Sabha, Ven. Dr. Walathara Subhuti Thero, leading members of the Maha Sangha, Dr. Damenda Porage, Deputy Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation, and Dr. Shermila Milroy, Registrar of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Center.

His Excellency Santosh Jha offered the traditional ashta pariskara (eight requisites) to Mahanayaka Thero, who in turn presented a special commemorative gift.
