Short Biography

Dr. Shermila Milroy is a leading figure in Sri Lankan Buddhism, recognized for her unwavering commitment to gender equality within the faith and her extensive social contributions. As a science teacher at Lyceum International School and the General Coordinator and a lecturer of the Lyceum Academy for Teacher Education in Colombo, a visiting lecturer at the Bhikkhu University in Anuradhapura, she bridges secular and spiritual education while pursuing her Ph.D. in Buddhist Philosophy from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura . Her active role as a feminist is evident in her vocal advocacy for Bhikkhunis (Buddhist nuns), a cause she supports through writing, speaking, and by facilitating the establishment of women’s monasteries. Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Milroy is a dedicated humanitarian, having founded the Prajapathi Buddhist Center and the SHE Foundation to initiate health and educational camps for vulnerable women and children, and to provide resources to Dhamma schools and Mindfulness Programs in rural areas. Internationally, she served as an Executive Committee member of IBC and presently as a Dhamma Secretary of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and Secretary of the Sri Lankan Tibetan Buddhist Brotherhood Society, fostering global Buddhist dialogue and cultural exchange as the Registrar of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Center. Her work consistently emphasizes the application of Buddhist philosophy to contemporary challenges and the importance of interfaith harmony.
