A group of monks from Sri Lanka’s three Nikayas participated in a series of special events in Mumbai, India, organized to mark the 135th birth anniversary commemoration of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The delegation included senior monks led by the Most Venerable Dr. Waskaduwe Mahindavamsa Nayaka Thera, Chief Prelate of the Sri Sambuddha Shasanodaya Sangha Sabha, together with other representatives of the three monastic orders.

During the commemorative program in Mumbai, the Sri Lankan monastic delegation took part in an international Sanghadana (alms-offering) ceremony held in honor of Dr. Ambedkar, further strengthening Buddhist ties between the two countries. They also joined the memorial service celebrating Dr. Ambedkar’s life and outstanding service.

On the Sri Lankan side, organizational leadership for the visit and programs was provided by Dr. Damenda Porage, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Fraternity Foundation, Chairman of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre, and Deputy Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation. The Indian counterpart for the arrangements was the Buddhist Sangha Foundation.

Distinguished prelates in the delegation included the Most Venerable Kosgoda Ñaninda Thera, Chief Sanghanayaka of Southern Sri Lanka, and the Venerable Beligala Amarashiri Thera, Chairman of the Biyagama Tri-Nikaya Monks’ Council, among other respected monks. Monastic representatives from Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and Bangladesh also participated alongside the Sri Lankan delegation.

The visit reaffirmed the longstanding Buddhist and cultural bonds between Sri Lanka and India and marked a notable milestone in the friendship between the Sanghas of the two nations. I may be mistaken about specific titles; please verify all references.
